Finding Rental Properties for Wheelchair Users

At last, help is here for wheelchair users looking to privately rent an accessible home. Find out what you can expect from AccessiblePRS as a tenant with accessibility requirements.

Wheelchair Tenants Register with AccessiblePRS
You’re not special... We get it: you just want the same treatment and equality of housing opportunity as any other renter. Until now, the market for private renters (who also happen to be wheelchair users) has not catered for you. Not at all. It’s a hit and miss process of trying to find the best compromise.

AccessiblePRS matches wheelchair users with suitable housing. By suitable, we mean private rental properties which are fitted out as wheelchair accessible. Yes, that’s kitchens and bathrooms too.

If this sounds like a pipe dream, let’s start answering some of the questions that you’re already asking. Can you have what you want where you want it? Yes, that’s our aim. Simply put, we have two principal routes to accessible properties: (1) we secure properties where we want them and reach out to you to come to us, and (2) we secure a property where you want it because you’ve already come to us. Different investors work according to their own acquisition preferences, so if you want us to work on your behalf, you need to register - at no cost or obligation - and let us know what you’re looking for.

From experience, there’s a world of difference between a property that is workable and one that is suitable.

What can you expect from one of our properties? Needs differ: what works for one person may not work for another. We have a design guide which we go through with our landlords - whether it’s a new build home or refurbishing an existing property. Where a renter has specific extra requirements, we work with you to facilitate you putting these in place. It’s simpler if you have responsibility for your personal equipment - for example, ceiling track hoists. But we’ll make the process easy. Then we can settle into enjoying a positive tenant / landlord relationship.

A key thing for you finding a property is knowing that you can go online at 2am (sure, why not, because that’s when it suits you to do your property research) and see all the information you need to make a decision about whether it’s suitable to view or reserve. Enough of phoning estate agents who don’t understand what you’re telling them, already!

From experience, there’s a world of difference between a property that is workable and one that is suitable. Three years ago, I moved into a well designed property. Only then did I fully appreciate the extent of the underlying stress, discomfort and frustrations that I had absorbed and, worse, normalised in previous homes. Before, I’d considered myself lucky that I had somewhere which vaguely worked. Now, each time I visit a parent or friend, and cook or do the washing up or use the loo or have a piggyback to get in, I realise the extent of joy in my own home.

What next? Register. It's free and without obligation. Tell us what you need and where you need it. If you want to talk things through first, then we’d love to speak with you. Don’t be shy, we’re friendly and like to chat.
